Lebanon's balance of payments has plummeted to a deficit of $163 million over the first two months of 2007, according to figures from the Central Bank, as the ongoing political paralysis continues to erode the country's macroeconomic health. Apr. 10, 2007- The negative balance of payments reflects the final tally of such key elements as foreign investment, tourist income, imports and exports, bank deposits and remittances from Lebanese abroad, although the Banque du Liban does not break down the overall balance into individual components. |

The U.S. Treasury Department considers Hezbollah's construction firm Jihad al Binaa -- "The Struggle to Build" -- a terrorist organization, prohibiting transactions between the firm and American citizens, as well as freezing any assets it may have under U.S. jurisdiction. Apr. 08, 2007- But the designation is unlikely to have much impact on an organization that receives hundreds of millions of dollars a year from donations channeled directly through Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the spiritual leader of the world's Shiites as well as the highest religious authority in Iran. |

Property giant Solidere, which belongs to the family of slain former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri, said Wednesday that its net profit rose 22 percent in 2006 despite last summer's war with Israel.
Apr. 05, 2007- The company, which rebuilt Beirut's city center following the country's 1975-90 civil war, said that net profit reached $132.2 million. |

Hariri assassination and its aftermath have caused demand for private protection to rise rapidly Apr. 04, 2007- The municipality of Beirut is set to hop on the private security bandwagon driving through Lebanon in the past five years. The number of private security firms operating in the county has grown to nearly 30, many of which have reported booming business in the wake of the 2005 murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and the political turmoil that followed.

A new, Bahrain-based charter airline agreed on Monday to add Beirut as a destination, expressing confidence that their target market of top-tier entrepreneurs will still travel to Lebanon even as its economy crumbles under the ongoing political instability. Apr. 02, 2007- Rizon Jet signed a deal on Monday with Middle East Airlines Ground Services to handle its new six-seat aircraft, which will cost fliers at least $2,800 per hour to journey throughout the region, the Far East or Europe, said Assaad Abiad, Rizon Jet's marketing manager. |

Chain of development centers to focus on small- and medium-sized enterprises Mar. 10, 2007- The European Union unveiled a 2.8 million euro ($3.7 million) investment on Friday to promote the growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Lebanon through four business development centers. Each of the four centers - in Beirut, Tripoli, Saida and Taanil in the Bekaa - will receive up to 700,000 euros to house and nurture SME start-ups as well as advise and provide technical assistance to existing firms.
