Bourse pulled off record performance in 2006 despite national crises
Feb. 08, 2007- Emboldened by record trading in 2006 despite a troubled year for the country, the Beirut Stock Exchange (BSE) unveiled ambitious plans Wednesday that would allow any investor with a computer to buy or sell any share listed in Lebanon with the touch of a button.

It was projected to be a golden year for Lebanon and one to beat all records; instead 2006 with its string of crises including a 34-day war proved a disaster for the tourism sector. Feb. 08, 2007 (AFP) - From the expected 1.6 million visitors, only 1.06 million travelled to the "Switzerland of the Middle East," down almost seven percent on 2005 and a huge 17 percent on the previous year, according to tourism ministry figures. |

Officials also cite stormy weather
Feb. 06, 2007- Lebanon's electric utility promised Tuesday to increase electricity supplies next week "when the weather improves," after over a month of power rationing outside of central Beirut has left many homes and business in the dark for eight to 12 hours per day. Energy-sector officials and Electricite du Liban (EDL) both attribute the recent blackouts to low electricity output at the Jiyyeh power plant - which is currently generating about 10 percent of its pre-war output - and bad weather.

Azour says public-sector programs are essenital to reform package Feb. 04, 2007- Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's Cabinet defended its economic policies over the weekend against criticism leveled by the Free Patriotic Movement, (FPM), which welcomed financial aid from the Paris III donor conference but said the government would use the funds exclusively to pay down Lebanon's budget deficit, to the detriment of social programs.

Economists put inflation of food prices at 10 percent in 2006 Feb. 02, 2007- Food prices have risen an average of 10 percent since the summer 2006 war with Israel and are expected to continue increasing in 2007, local economists told The Daily Star on Thursday. Prices of fruits and vegetables have soared, and the nation's shoppers are feeling the effects. "It makes a big difference," said Nicole Bersuder as she shopped in a grocery store in Gemmayzeh. "[If] I had LL5,000, I feel rich to buy fruits and vegetables - now, it's up to LL10,000.

Sector lost 10 percent of assets during conflict Feb. 01, 2007- Lebanon's nascent microfinance industry was set back years by the summer 2006 war with Israel and continues to face a constant struggle for financing. The sector, which aims to lift people out of poverty by lending small sums, lost roughly 10 percent of its assets in the war, industry leaders told The Daily Star on Wednesday. |

Like many local businesses, Lebanese advertising firms will stay put in 2007, but many are hedging their bets against the politically sensitive, stagnant economy by staking their claim on expanding regional markets. Dani Richa, the president of Impact BBDO and the International Advertising Association (IAA), acknowledged that the local market has shrunk since last summer's war, but predicted that Lebanon will remain a regional hub for the industry despite the mounting political chaos in Beirut. Feb. 01, 2007- "No matter how bad things get a lot of networks have people in Lebanon with regional responsibilities so they can still conduct those operations from here," he explained on Wednesday, mid-way through a four-day regional marketing forum being held in Faraya Mzaar. |
