Saudi Arabia Throws its Lot Behind the Dialogue
Saudi Arabia has expressed its backing for the national dialogue among rival political leaders in Lebanon where a pro-and anti-Syria rift had kindled sectarian tensions.
An Nahar reported from the kingdom that King Abdullah had welcomed the national dialogue in an audience with Walid Jumblat, the Druze leader and head of the Progressive Socialist Party.

King Abdullah hailed the conciliatory atmosphere among pro- and anti-Syrian leaders and their readiness to implement what was agreed upon in dialogue.

The head of the general intelligence Prince Moqren bin Abdul Aziz and the minister of state Prince Abdul Aziz bin Fahd attended the meeting.

During his quick trip Jumblat met with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal where they "exchanged views over regional and international causes of mutual interest," An Nahar quoted the Saudi news agency as saying.

Jumblat also met with Beirut MP Saad Hariri who is in Riyadh for a private visit. Jumblat discussed with Hariri the latter's latest talks with French President Jacques Chirac.

The maverick leader also met with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdul Aziz bin Zayed who was in Riyadh.

Jumblat was accompanied by Telecommunications Minister Marwan Hamadeh, Immigration Minister Nehmeh Tohmeh and Information Minister Ghazi al-Aridi.

The dialogue is expected to resume on April 28 after the Easter holidays and the return of PM Saniora from a trip to Washington and New York this week.(Photo shows Walid Jumblat and King Abdullah)
