Lebanese army brigadier general Francois El Hajj was killed Wednesday in a roadside bomb that rocked an area outside Beirut, a security source told AFP.
"General Hajj was killed in the explosion," the security source said on condition of anonymity.
His death comes as Lebanon's feuding politicians are deadlocked over attempts to elect army chief General Michel Sleiman to replace incumbent president Emile Lahoud who ended his term on November 23.
A Lebanese Red Cross source earlier told AFP that four people were killed and seven wounded in a blast that rocked the suburb of Baabda, on the southeastern outskirts of Beirut.
A security source told AFP Hajj was in a car with his driver when the blast occurred.
Hajj was chief of operations last summer during a fierce 15-week battle between the army and an extremist Islamist group.- AFP
