Berri Postpones Presidential Elections To Facilitate Moussa's Mission
Written by Naharnet
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri postponed the presidential election to Monday, Jan. 21, and his office said the move was prompted by the "good will" efforts exerted by Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa to settle the ongoing crisis.
A short statement released by Parliament secretariat general said Berri "decided to postpone the session that had been set for Saturday Jan. 12 to elect a president to Monday Jan. 21 at 12:00 noon time."
The state-run National News Agency, which carried the statement, said the decision to postpone the session was in line with the good will efforts exerted by Moussa to implement decisions adopted by Arab foreign ministers."
Moussa has been in Beirut since Monday meeting officials of the various political factions in an effort to facilitate the election of Army Commander Gen. Michel Suleiman president.
His efforts, however, have not resulted in a breakthrough.
